Advice From Vikki-Playing Par 3's

Tonight I had a huge breakthrough with my on course clinic. As we were playing a few holes we reached a Par 3 that was about 120 yards and mostly all over water. These holes wreak havoc on us mentally and sometimes all we see is the water. However the green was very big and I told them that instead of playing it 120 yards they had at least 140 yards to work with since that was the yardage to the back of the green. They seemed to focus on the front of the green and the ball rolling to the hole. I suggested they play the hole like a Par 4 or Par 5, which we had just played and they all hit great drives. I said get up and hit this like you are driving on a long hole and if it goes through the green that?s fine because there was no danger in the back or over the green.

When they heard this they said they relaxed and just hit the ball. Their contact was solid and they all carried the water. With this I believe most of us do not play enough club on Par 3?s. Plus we have a different attitude trying to be so accurate which gives us pressure and tightens up our body.

Therefore next time you play a Par 3 think of the yardage to the back of the green and act like you are swinging it just like you would off the tee of a Par 4 or Par 5. Making solid contact and having enough club is the key.
